In the late eighth century, Baghdad was not only the political capital of the Abbasid Caliphate but also the busiest center of learning of its age. A library and translation milieu known as the "House of Wisdom" (Bayt al-Hikma) became the hub of a broad movement that carried the scientific heritage of the Greek, Persian, Indian, and Syriac worlds into Arabic. The Translation Movement: From Greek into Arabic

The Graeco-Arabic translation movement, which ran from the mid-eighth to the tenth century, is one of the most extensive transfers of knowledge in human history. Translations were made not only from Greek but also from Syriac, Pahlavi (Middle Persian), Sanskrit, and Aramaic. Greek texts were often translated in two stages, first into Syriac and then into Arabic.

At first the emphasis was on medicine, mathematics, and astronomy; philosophy was soon added. The works of Aristotle and Plato, Euclid's "Elements," Ptolemy's "Almagest," and the medical corpus of Galen and Hippocrates were rendered into Arabic. Indian astronomy became known through the translation of Brahmagupta's work under the title "Sindhind"; the decimal place-value system and the concept of zero passed this way into the Islamic world and from there to Europe. By the end of the tenth century, almost all the secular Greek works of science and philosophy available in late antiquity had been translated into Arabic.

Paper and the Patronage of the Caliphs

The technical innovation that made book production on this scale possible was paper. Papermaking, learned from Chinese craftsmen after the Battle of Talas in 751, was institutionalized with a workshop in Baghdad by the end of the eighth century. Cheap compared with papyrus and parchment, paper allowed libraries and private collections to multiply rapidly.

Patronage was also decisive. Sources report that al-Ma'mun paid translators the weight of the completed book in gold. The caliph sent envoys to Byzantium to bring back manuscripts. Wealthy patrons such as the Banu Musa brothers financed translation work from their own pockets.

Leading Figures

Hunayn ibn Ishaq (809–873) was a Nestorian Christian physician regarded as the most productive translator of the age. He translated almost the entire corpus of Galen along with works by Hippocrates and Dioscorides, developing a meticulous method of comparing different manuscripts.

Al-Khwarizmi (d. around 850) wrote the founding text of algebra; the words "algebra" (al-jabr) and "algorithm" derive from him. He also introduced the use of Indian numerals.

The Banu Musa brothers worked in mathematics and mechanics; in their "Book of Ingenious Devices" they designed self-operating mechanisms.

The translation movement had also reached its natural limit: the major works left to translate were largely exhausted, and intellectual vitality had spread to other centers such as Cairo and Córdoba.

The definitive end came in 1258. The Mongol army under Hulagu Khan besieged and sacked Baghdad. According to tradition, the books in the libraries were thrown into the Tigris, and the river ran black with ink for days. The historian Michal Biran notes that this account may be a literary trope exaggerating Mongol destruction; even so, it is clear that the city's intellectual infrastructure suffered a heavy blow in the invasion.

Legacy: A Bridge in the History of Science

The most concrete result of the translation movement is the preservation of ancient knowledge. Some Greek works have survived to our day only through their Arabic translations. In the twelfth century, these Arabic texts were translated into Latin in Toledo and Sicily; Aristotle, Euclid, Ptolemy, and the original works of Islamic scholars entered Europe this way and prepared the ground for scholastic thought and the Renaissance.

The knowledge produced around the House of Wisdom was not mere transmission. Original contributions in algebra, optics, medicine, and astronomy deepened in later centuries through figures such as Ibn al-Haytham and Ibn Sina. This experience is one of history's clearest examples of science as a cumulative and cross-cultural endeavor.
