Adenosine

Adenosine is a nucleoside naturally present in the brain and body, gradually accumulating as brain cells expend energy during waking hours. It binds to A1 and A2A receptors in the brain, reducing neuron excitability and activating the signaling pathways that increase sleep pressure; caffeine works by temporarily blocking these receptors, preventing adenosine's effect.
