Endorheic Basin

An endorheic basin is a closed drainage system that collects rainfall and river water but has no outlet to the sea or ocean, losing water solely through evaporation. Lakes such as the Aral Sea, the Caspian Sea, and the Great Salt Lake all lie within such basins. In these systems, any sustained drop in river inflow can cause the lake to shrink rapidly and, often, irreversibly.
