Hieroglyphs

Hieroglyphs are a picture-based writing system used in Ancient Egypt that could represent both sounds and concepts. Undeciphered for thousands of years, the script was finally decoded in 1822 by Jean-François Champollion, thanks to the Rosetta Stone discovered in 1799, which bore the same text in three different scripts (hieroglyphic, demotic and ancient Greek).
