Impressionism is an art movement that emerged in France in the 1870s, aiming to capture on canvas not the precise outlines of objects but the impression of light and of the fleeting moment, using rapid, visible brushstrokes. Rejected by the official art institutions of its time, this approach eventually became one of the most influential turning points in modern art.
