Internal Combustion Engine

An internal combustion engine is an engine that converts into mechanical motion the energy released when fuel (usually gasoline or diesel) is mixed with air and burned inside an enclosed combustion chamber. It has been the dominant power source for road transport since the late 19th century and remains in use today in hybrid systems that combine it with electric motors.
