Ion Exchange

Ion exchange is a chemical process in which unwanted ions in a solution — such as calcium and magnesium — swap places with other ions, typically sodium, held on a resin surface. It underlies how water softeners work: hardness ions are captured by the resin while sodium ions are released into the water, and once the resin is saturated it is recharged by flushing it with salt brine.
