Metonic Cycle

The Metonic cycle is an astronomical period based on the fact that 19 solar years correspond almost exactly to 235 lunar months (cycles of the Moon's phases). Thanks to this alignment, lunisolar calendar systems (such as the Hebrew calendar) that seek to keep lunar and solar reckoning in step insert an additional month in certain years to synchronize the seasons with the lunar phases.
