Mouseion

The Mouseion was the broader scholarly institution in ancient Alexandria — named after the Muses of Greek mythology — that housed the Great Library along with an observatory, botanical gardens, and communal living quarters for state-salaried scholars. It is often considered a distant ancestor of the modern research university.
