Plate Tectonics
Plate tectonics is the geological theory explaining that the Earth's outermost layer (the lithosphere) is divided into plates of various sizes that move slowly over the mantle. The collision, separation or sliding past of these plates accounts for large-scale features such as mountain building, earthquakes, volcanic activity and ocean trenches.
