Serotonin
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter - a chemical messenger - that carries signals between nerve cells in the brain. It influences mood, sleep, and pain perception, among other processes. During a migraine attack, sudden fluctuations in serotonin levels are thought to affect blood vessel behavior and the trigeminal nerve's sensitivity to pain.
