Transdifferentiation

Transdifferentiation is the direct conversion of a mature, specialized cell into a different cell type without first returning to a stem-cell state. Normal cell development is generally considered a one-way process, but in some organisms — such as the immortal jellyfish, Turritopsis dohrnii — cells can bypass this rule and reprogram themselves into an entirely different tissue type. Scientists are studying this process as a potential model for repairing damaged tissue and for anti-aging treatments.
