What Is a Camera Obscura?

A camera obscura (Latin for "dark chamber") is an optical device based on a simple principle: light passing through a small hole or a lens in one surface projects, onto the opposite surface, an inverted and laterally reversed image of the scene outside. When the aperture is small enough, the light from every point in the outside world converges to a single point on the dark interior surface, producing a sharp projection. The image is in colour, it moves, and it carries perspective and the play of light and shadow exactly as they are; its only "flaw" is that it appears upside down. In English the device is simply called the camera obscura.

This apparatus is the direct ancestor of the modern photographic camera, which took its name from it. For centuries, however, its real function was not to record the image but to cast it onto paper or canvas in a form that a painter or draughtsman could trace by hand. In this sense the camera obscura was the most powerful aid for depicting nature with an almost mechanical accuracy before photography was invented.

The Long History of the Optical Principle

The principle behind the camera obscura is far older than the device itself. In the 4th century BCE the Chinese philosopher Mozi described how light entering a dark room through a small hole forms an inverted image. Aristotle observed that light filtering through gaps between leaves during a solar eclipse cast crescent-shaped patches on the ground. The first person to explain the geometry of the effect in detail was the Arab scholar Ibn al-Haytham, who treated the subject in his Book of Optics around 1015.

Throughout the Middle Ages the arrangement was used above all for observing the sky: astronomers could safely study a solar eclipse, dangerous to view directly, by examining the projection cast on the wall of a darkened room. The term "camera obscura" was first used in this context by the astronomer Johannes Kepler in the early 17th century.

Becoming a Drawing Instrument in the Renaissance

The device's real link with art was forged during the Renaissance. In 1550 the Italian scholar Gerolamo Cardano reported that placing a lens in the hole made the image markedly brighter and sharper. Soon afterwards the Venetian Daniele Barbaro showed that adding an adjustable aperture (a diaphragm) could sharpen the image further. These two improvements turned the lens-fitted camera obscura into a widespread aid for drawing and painting from the second half of the 16th century.

Leonardo da Vinci had described how the arrangement works by comparing it to the human eye, illustrating with drawings how light crosses over after passing through the hole. The person who presented the device to a wide readership as a recommendation for painters was the Neapolitan scholar Giambattista della Porta; his open endorsement of it in the widely read Magia Naturalis (1558) did much to make the camera obscura famous.

The Portable Box and the Painter's Studio

At first the camera obscura was literally a room: the painter stepped inside a darkened space and watched the image on the wall. In the 17th century the device shrank. First came portable tent-shaped models, then wooden boxes with a lens at one end, a mirror set at 45 degrees inside, and a sheet of ground glass on top. The mirror corrected the inverted image and threw it onto the ground glass, where the painter could lay a thin sheet of paper and trace the outlines with a pencil.

According to the National Gallery in London, in this arrangement "light reflected from the chosen subject outside of the box passed through the lens and was projected on to a surface on a much smaller scale," and "the subject could then be traced." These portable boxes became so common among landscape painters in the 18th century that some used them not for finished pictures but to produce quick sketches with accurate perspective.

Vermeer, Canaletto and the Question of Evidence

The painter most often suspected of using a camera obscura is the 17th-century Dutch master Johannes Vermeer. The soft, out-of-focus points of light in his paintings, certain spatial proportions, and the exaggerated size of foreground objects may point to an optical aid. The architect Philip Steadman reconstructed the geometry of Vermeer's rooms and argued that many paintings match, almost exactly, the image a camera obscura would produce. Even so, not a single contemporary document showing that Vermeer used such a device has survived, and experts such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art curator Walter Liedtke hold that its importance to the artist "has been greatly exaggerated."

For Antonio Canaletto, known for his views of Venice, the evidence is more concrete: his surviving preparatory drawings show a striking match when overlaid on photographs of the city, and the National Gallery states that the device "is known to have been employed" by him. Names such as Hans Holbein, Caravaggio and Ingres have from time to time been drawn into the same debate.

The Hockney–Falco Thesis and Its Critics

In 2001 the painter David Hockney and the physicist Charles Falco advanced a far bolder claim in the study Secret Knowledge: the leap in realism in Western painting could be explained by artists projecting and tracing images with concave mirrors and lenses as early as the 1420s. For Hockney this does not diminish the artists' skill; it merely tells "a different story."

The thesis was sharply criticised among art historians and optics specialists. Critics stressed that the lenses and mirrors of the period could not have produced images of such breadth and clarity, that many of the proposed "clues" can be explained by the natural results of freehand drawing, and that no trace of such a widespread practice appears in the documents of the time. The prevailing view today is that some painters made use of the camera obscura, but that this was not a systematic or widespread "secret technique."

The Road to Photography

The final act of the camera obscura opened with the effort to make its projected image permanent. In the 1820s the French inventor Nicéphore Niépce placed a light-sensitive surface inside a small camera obscura box and produced the first known permanent photograph in history. Shortly afterwards Louis Daguerre and, in England, William Henry Fox Talbot combined the same box with light-sensitive chemicals and invented photography.

The instrument that had guided the painter's hand for centuries thus became, in the 19th century, entirely independent of that hand: the image was now recorded not by a person but by chemistry. Yet the camera obscura did not disappear; today it lives on in museums, observation rooms and artists' studios as a tool for thinking about perspective and vision.
