When buying a light bulb, most people still ask, "How many watts?" But watts measure the electrical power a bulb draws, not the light it produces. The unit that describes how much light a bulb gives off is the lumen. LED, halogen, and fluorescent bulbs produce the same number of lumens at very different wattages. The halogen bulb is an improved form of incandescent. A halogen gas added to the bulb returns evaporated tungsten to the filament, letting it run hotter and slightly more efficiently. Because of this low efficiency, many countries have gradually restricted the sale of incandescent and halogen bulbs.

Fluorescent and Compact Fluorescent (CFL) Bulbs

In fluorescent lamps, light is created when current passing through mercury vapor produces ultraviolet radiation that excites a phosphor coating on the inside of the tube, turning it into visible light. Long tubes are common in offices and kitchens; compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs are the shrunken version made to fit standard sockets.

CFLs are far more efficient than incandescent bulbs; they deliver 55 to 65 lumens per watt and use about 70 percent less energy than an incandescent bulb, even though they release roughly 80 percent of their energy as heat. Their life ranges from 8,000 to 15,000 hours. They have drawbacks: they take a few seconds to reach full brightness, frequent switching shortens their life, they start poorly in cold temperatures, and because they contain a small amount of mercury, a broken CFL must be cleaned up carefully and disposed of separately.

How LED Bulbs Work

An LED (light-emitting diode) is a solid-state device that produces light when electric current passes through a semiconductor material. Because a single LED emits nearly monochromatic light, the white light used for home lighting is usually made with a phosphor coating on a blue LED or by mixing light from red, green, and blue LEDs.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, LEDs are today's most efficient lighting technology: ENERGY STAR-certified LEDs use at least 75 percent less energy than incandescent lighting and last up to 25 times longer. A good LED bulb lasts 30,000 to 50,000 hours. LEDs give off very little heat and emit their light directionally, so less light is lost inside the fixture; traditional bulbs emit in every direction, and 40 to 50 percent can be lost within the fixture. Their efficacy runs from 80 to 130 lumens per watt, exceeding 150 in specialized products.

So when replacing a bulb, it is best to read the lumen figure directly rather than the "watt equivalent" claim.

Color Temperature and Choosing the Right Bulb

While lumens set the brightness, color temperature in kelvins (K) sets the color of the light. Values around 2700 K give a warm, yellow light suited to living rooms and bedrooms; 3000 to 3500 K is close to neutral white; 4000 K and above produce a bluish, daylight-like tone preferred for work areas and kitchen counters. On dimmer circuits, choose an LED labeled "dimmable," or flicker or buzzing may occur. The base type (E27, E14, GU10, and so on), the size, and suitability for enclosed fixtures should also be checked before buying.
